Saddler-Walker, a counselor at Eastway Elementary School in Durham, England, is taking a slightly different approach to education. According to the counselor, yoga is very beneficial in helping the kids. Hence, she is using a more holistic approach to education.
“Yoga deals with the mind, body and the spirit. It’s not a religious type of practice. Yoga helps with self-regulation because it helps people calm down and allows them to focus and concentrate on themselves. That goes for adults and kids alike. It just makes a child feel good about who they are,” said Saddler-Walker, who is also the owner of WythaBalance Yoga.
WythaBalance Yoga also conducts regular summer camps for children aged between six to twelve years old. “She just took to it immediately. It’s just relaxation techniques,” stated Rashonn Albritton, whose 10-year-old daughter participated in the camp for two summers. According to Rashonn, the camp also teaches students conflict-resolution skills. Aside from that, Saddler-Walker would usually engage the parents through yoga and other smiliar components such as Zumba workouts. At the same time, she also provides them with parenting resources.
For Saddler-Walker, she has been practicing yoga since 2009. She’s actually specialised in working with disabled children with different conditions. Some of the conditions include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism. In fact, the WythaBalance Yoga Creative Summer camp works in collaboration with A Parenting Touch and the Partnership Efforts for the Advancement of Children’s Health (PEACH). For those who might be looking for a more family-oriented yoga class, do not fret. OMG Yoga has recently launched our Family Yoga class to cater to the entire family. Yes, now you can take up the practice along with your children, making it a weekly family activity. The best part of it all is that this “activity” enables the entire family to keep fit!
